Current News:Google doodle celebrates Mangalyaan's one month in Mars orbit

In a tribute to India's space-technology prowess, Google is celebrating with a doodle today the completion of one month by Mangalyaan in an orbit around Mars. India's Mars Orbiter Mission, or Mangalyaan (Sanskrit for Mars craft), started orbiting Mars on September 24.

Given that Google normally comes up with doodles to mark anniversaries, that is, annual events, this gesture of the search giant is rare. The doodle will be visible only in India.

News:4.93 million Gmail passwords leaked by hackers

4.93 million Gmail passwords leaked by hackers

Russian hackers have leaked the email IDs and passwords of as many as 4.93 million Google accounts. The same Google account password is used across all Google products, such as Gmail, Drive, Plus, YouTube, Maps etc.

The account details have been posted on bitcoin forum btcsec.com by a user named Tvskit. On the forum, Tvskit has said that approximately 60% of the passwords are still active.

Google in a blog post, however, refuted the claim and said that only 2% of the passwords still work and also said that its automated anti-hijacking systems would have blocked many of the login attempts.

While acknowledging the leak, Google said that this is not due to a breach in its own systems.

It said: "Often, these credentials are obtained through a combination of other sources. For instance, if you reuse the same username and password across websites, and one of those websites gets hacked, your credentials could be used to log into the others. Or attackers can use malware or phishing schemes to capture login credentials."

Tech news:iPhone 6 specifications and iPhone 6 vs. Samsung Galaxy S5 vs. LG G3 vs. Sony Xperia Z3 vs. HTC One (M8)

iPhone 6 specifications and iPhone 6  vs. Samsung Galaxy S5 vs. LG G3 vs. Sony Xperia Z3 vs. HTC One (M8)

Apple on Tuesday refreshed its iPhone lineup with the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The Cupertino-based giant also unveiled the much-awaited Apple Watch wearable alongside the company's new digital payment mechanism called Apple Pay. Interestingly, Apple also revealed the availability of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus for the Indian market, as the company's India site mentions the smartphones would be reaching the country starting October 17.

(Also see: Apple Watch Unveiled as 'Comprehensive Health and Fitness Companion')

With the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus confirmed to hit the Indian market shelves during the festival season in the country, we can expect some fireworks in the smartphone industry.

(In comparison: iPhone 6 Plus versus iPhone 6 versus iPhone 5s versus iPhone 5c)

The company finally entered the screen size battle with the new iPhones and attributed the move to consumers that are switching to handsets with bigger displays to watch videos and browse the Internet.

We compare the newly launched iPhone 6 against Android flagships from major manufacturers, such as the HTC One (M8), LG G3, Samsung Galaxy S5, and Sony Xperia Z3.

The new iPhone 6 is slimmer, taller and wider than the previous iPhone models, with dimensions of 138.1x67x6.9mm - the iPhone 5s measured 123.80x58.60x7.60mm. Apple is touting the iPhone 6 as the "thinnest" iPhone ever launched.

Compared to the Android flagships, the iPhone 6 appears to have the edge in slimness, and with its smaller display is also smaller overall - the HTC One (M8) (Review | Pictures) measures 146.36x70.6x9.35mm; the LG G3 (Review | Pictures) measures 146.3x74.6x8.9mm; the Samsung Galaxy S5 (Review | Pictures) measures 142x72.5x8.1mm, while the Sony Xperia Z3 measures 146x72x7.3mm.

Apple iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display offering a screen resolution 750x1334 pixels. It offers a pixel density of 326ppi, similar to the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c with their 4-inch displays. Compared to the Android flagships, the iPhone 6 has the smallest screen at 4.7-inch, followed by One (M8) at 5-inch; Galaxy S5 at 5.1-inch, and Xperia Z3 at 5.2-inch. The LG G3 sports the biggest display with 5.5-inch screen.

The iPhone 6 weighs around 129 grams, making it much lighter than the Android flagships in this comparison. At 160 grams, the HTC One (M8) is the heaviest, followed by Sony Xperia Z3 at 152 grams, LG G3 at 149 grams, and lastly, the Samsung Galaxy S5 at 145 grams.

The new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are both powered by the new Apple A8 chip with 64-bit architecture while also feature the M8 motion coprocessor. The new A8 chip is an upgrade to the company's previous A7 chipset found in iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. Unfortunately, not much is known about the specifications of the Apple A8 SoC, and until the phone is put through its paces in a benchmark or taken apart by a hardware review site, we will not know details about the number of cores, clock speed, and amount of system memory. Previous reports claiming to have run benchmarks on the iPhone 6 ahead of the smartphone's launch give contrary specifications, with some saying dual-core and the other quad-core, though most agree on 1GB of RAM.

All four Android phones have roughly the same characteristics when it comes to processor. The G3, One M8, Xperia Z3 use a similar 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S5 is available in two variants - powered by octa-core Exynos 5420 processor and Snapdragon 801. The flagships are available with either 2GB or 3GB of RAM, depending on the variant.

Even once the specifications of the Apple A8 processor are made available, a comparison between it and the SoCs used by the Android flagships will be difficult to make, with dissimilar benchmarks to run due to the differing nature of the platform the SoCs are made for. Even if the Apple A8 reveals specifications that on paper are obviously lower than the SoCs used on Android flagships, real world performance is the only indication we can use - as Apple in the past has shown it is able to deliver top-end performance with meagre specifications due to its hardware-software optimisation.

In the camera department, the iPhone 6 sports an 8-megapixel rear iSight camera, which might appear less in pixel count when compared to other Android flagships like the Galaxy S5 with its 16-megapixel camera; the Xperia Z3 with its 20.7-megapixel camera; the LG G3 with its 13-megapixel camera, and the HTC One (M8) and its 4-UltraPixel camera. The iPhone 6 also sports 1.2-megapixel front camera, while the Sony Xperia Z3 sports a 2.2-megapixel front camera, the LG G3 a 2.1-megapixel front camera, the Samsung Galaxy S5 a 2-megapixel front camera, and the HTC One (M8) with a 5-megapixel front camera.

On paper, the rear iSight camera found in the iPhone 6 seems similar to the one seen on the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5, though it brings a new autofocus technology called Focus pixels. It also features an f/2.2 lens. Notably, only the bigger iPhone 6 Plus features optical image stabilisation (OIS).

As we've seen in the past, it is almost impossible to compare cameras based purely on pixel count, and the output quality is all that matters. Most end-users never actually use their captured images at full-resolution, with most people simply sharing their photos on social media, or applying them as wallpapers. Only professional photographers need to worry about pixel count, that too when blowing up the image for specific purposes. The real-world camera performance comparison will be only done when we review the iPhone 6.

On paper, the iPhone 6 certainly seems to be putting up the good fight with Android flagships, and Apple is definitely looking to deliver to users the hardware features (like OIS, NFC, a large high-resolution display) that have been missing in its lineup. The iPhone 6 also gains a distinct advantage with its overall slimmer profile, though the tradeoff is a slightly smaller display. It must be noted however, until the real world performance of the smartphone is measured against its rivals, it will be very difficult to say which flagship comes out on top.

Tech News:first Android One smartphone could launch by Micromax today

first Android One smartphone  could launch by Micromax today

Micromax could launch first Android One smartphone today
Micromax is expected to unveil a new smartphone today, which could be the first Android One device to launch in India. With Android One, we can expect low-cost smartphones that will perform better than existing low-cost Androids, since the software will be coming straight from Google.

The phone is expected to be priced around Rs 7,000 and will be selling exclusively on Snapdeal from 2PM onwards. Ironically, Snapdeal says the phone won't 'discriminate' in a video teasing the phone's launch.

India is a huge market for low-cost devices and with Firefox OS and Android One foraying into this market, the race to bringing the most cost-effective smartphones is only going to get hotter.

Google has been working with Indian vendors to reduce costs in smartphone development by identifying parts that go into Android One smartphones and pre-selecting suppliers for the components. What really steals the deal is the fact that these phones will get the similar privileged treatment as Nexus devices when it comes to automatic software updates, and are nearly guaranteed to get the Android L update when it becomes available.

Not only are Micromax and Karbonn part of Google's plans, but Android One devices will also be produced by Intex, Celkon and Spice. Google is aiming for a sub-$100 price tag for Android One, though eventually this may be stretched a little more.

Moto G2 launch on Sept 4 : Moto X successor and Moto 360 smartwatch

Moto G2 launch on Sept 4 :

Moto X successor and Moto 360 smartwatch

The successor of Moto G and Moto X, Moto G2 and X+1 respectively, and their smart watch Moto 360 will probably be released tomorrow, September 4, at a press event in Chicago, USA while Motorola will also have a press event in India to release the phone. While the IFA trade show which kicks off in Berlin on September 5. Motorola sent out invitations for the Press event which had the letters G and printed on the drawing of a phone, possibly hinting at the successors of G and X successors. Motorola’s much awaited smart watch, Moto 360 will also be launched .
Moto G2 is rumored to have a Snapdragon 400 processor and 5 inch screen. Moto G2 will sport an 8 MP rear-facing camera unit with LED flash in addition to a 2 MP secondary cam. Motorola Moto G2 will also be a dual SIM phone, just like its predecessor. It will probably have a price tag of approximately Rs 13,000.
A surprising thing is that Motorola is facing tough competition from the likes of Xiaomi and Asus who are offering phones with similar specifications at half the price and offering phones with twice as better specifications at the same price. Xiaomi had released Mi 3 in August for the same price but with twice as good specs while Redmi 1S was released yesterday at half the reported price of Moto G2. Will it affect the sales of the Moto G2? It is difficult to say.
Another update to Motorola’s old phones is the successor to X. The phone is rumored to have Android 4.4 KitKat, a 5.2-inch full-HD display with  a resolution of 1080×1920, a 2.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. It is reported to have 16GB of built-in storage and there is no news on its expandable memory. It will have a 12-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front facing camera.
A much-awaited addition to Motorola’s catalogue is its new smartwatch Moto 360. There have been many previews of it from Motorola themselves but it has not yet been released in the market. That, though, might change tomorrow. Moto 360 looks different when compared to the Galaxy Gear from Samsung and Sony Smart watch with a circular touch screen frame and a very classy look.
With Samsung launching its new phablet Galaxy Note 4 on September 3 and Apple probably releasing its new iPhone 6 expect this to be very busy week for gadget lovers. Xiaomi has already launched it phone Redmi 1S. Now the wait is on for Motorola to release its own. Knowing Motorola in recent years, expect a few surprises.

Science and Tech: Li-fi protocol allows use of the internet at the speed of light

Li-fi protocol allows use of the internet at the speed of light

Sisoft Company in Mexico has developed a technology that can illuminate a large work space, an auditorium or an office, while providing full mobile internet to every device that comes into the range of the light spectrum.
The Mexican group managed to transmit audio, video and Internet across the spectrum of light emitted by LED lamps. This new technology, called Li-Fi or light fidelity, is presented as an alternative to Wi-Fi because it will maximize the original provided speed of the internet to offer safer data transfer and a transfer rate of up to 10 gigabytes per second.
The Li-Fi device circulates data via LEDs that emit an intermittent flicker at a speed imperceptible to the human eye. "As Wi-Fi uses cables to spread our connections, wireless transmission Li-Fi uses LED lamps that emit high brightness light", said Arturo Campos Fentanes, CEO of Sisoft in Mexico.

How to increase iPhone or Android's battery life

To increase  iPhone or Android's battery life:

battery symbol

  • Turn the screen brightness down

On iOS 7, use the dimming slider on the Control Centre (swipe up from the bottom of the screen), or in any version of iOS go to Settings -> Wallpaper & Brightness -> Brightness. It’s often a good idea to turn off auto-brightness, which makes the screen brighter when you’re in bright surroundings.

On Android, use the screen brightness toggle in Quick Settings (swipe down from the top to bring down the Notification Shade and tap the top right had quick settings toggle if needed) the brightness slider under display settings. Some Android phones, including Samsung devices, let you increase or decrease the screen brightness while still maintaining automatic adjustment.

  • When you can, switch to Airplane mode

On iOS 7, swipe up for Control Centre and press the “Airplane” icon on the top left.
On Android, swipe down for the Notifications Shade, switch to Quick Settings and tap the “Airplane” icon.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi and Blutooth

On iOS, swipe up for Control Centre: if the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth icons are showing white, press them so they’re showing as grey.
On Android, swipe down for the Notifications Shade, switch to Quick Settings and tap the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth icons so that they are greyed out.
  • Turn on Airplane mode but enable Wi-Fi

On iOS, swipe up for Control Centre, touch the Airplane icon so it goes white: the Wi-Fi icon will go grey. Then touch the Wi-Fi icon, which will go white.
On Android, swipe down for the Notifications Shade, switch to Quick Settings and tap the “Airplane” icon, then tap on the Wi-Fi icon which will light up.
  • Turn it into a phone without internet

On iOS, to turn off mobile data go to Settings -> Mobile (or Cellular in the US) -> Mobile data: turn this off.
On Android, turn off mobile data by going into Settings –> Data usage –> untick Mobile data to turn it off.
  • Manually check email, Twitter or Facebook

On iOS, the best way is to deactivate those apps in the Notification Centre - though you might not remember to reinstate them. But if you really need to, go to the Notification Centre and choose “none” for the activation style.
On Android, turn off “Sync” by going into Settings –> Accounts and then tap each account you want to turn Sync off for. Once in each account, uncheck Sync. Google, Exchange, Twitter, Facebook, Evernote and many other accounts have Sync options. Users can still check their email manually by using the Gmail or applicable app and manually refreshing their email.
Some Android phones also have a Sync toggle in Quick Settings, which disables Sync for all accounts on the device.
  • Turn off the screen faster

On iOS, go to Settings -> General -> Auto-Lock and reduce this (the lowest possible setting is 1 minute). Alternatively, any time you’ve done looking at the screen, press the power button on top of the device to turn off (and lock) the screen. It’s also a good idea to have a passcode set - as most people already do - just in case you lose your device. (Do that in Settings -> Passcode; on the iPhone 5S it is “Touch ID & Passcode”.)
On Android, reduce the Screen timeout within Settings –> Display –> Screen timeout.
  • Turn off location detection

On iOS, go to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services and turn it “Off”. This will prevent you getting maps and a lot of location-based information (and means your phone won’t be able to reset its time zone when you arrive at your destination).
On Android, go to Settings –> Location and switch it to “Off”. This will disable location services for all apps. Alternatively you can change accuracy of location information (and reduce power consumption) by tapping “Mode” under Location and changing to Battery or Power saving, which uses Wi-Fi and mobile phone signal to estimate the phone’s location, rather than GPS.
  • Don’t listen to music, watch video or play games

Decoding MP3s or MP4s, and doing the calculations for a game all make demands on the phone’s processor.

  • Minimise the photos you share.

Using the camera can be a significant drain on the battery, especially video recording. When you need the battery to last, stop taking photos.
While dimming the screen and turning off radios will give you the greatest benefit in terms of battery saving, there are still some platform-specific ways to save battery life if you just want to simplify things.

Tech Buzz: Microsoft Adds Sci-Fi Series to Xbox Originals

Microsoft Adds Sci-Fi Series to Xbox Originals

Microsoft added to its list of original programming for its Xbox gaming system Monday with the announcement of a new science fiction series called Humans.

Humans -- based on the Swedish TV series Real Humans -- is a cooperative effort of Xbox Entertainment Studios and UK broadcaster Channel 4. It is scheduled to air next year exclusively on the Xbox platform and Channel 4.

Eight one-hour episodes will be produced by Kudos and scripted by the team of Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, writers of the popular UK TV series Spooks.

In Humans, human-like robots known as "synths" are the hottest gadgets around, but their human side can pose problems for their human masters.

Humans is entering an Xbox pipeline that includes a series based on the blockbuster game Halo, produced by Steven Spielberg; Every Street United, a reality series based on street soccer; a sketch comedy series by Sarah Silverman and Michael Cera's JASH Comedy Network; and a stop-motion animated feature by Seth Green, who won an Emmy award for Robot Chicken.

Game of Eyeballs

In producing original content for online streaming, Microsoft is following the lead of Netflix and Amazon, but it plans to add some new wrinkles to its offerings. Humans, for instance, will allow viewers to follow development of characters outside the plotted episodes. In Every Street United, planned for release in time for the World Cup this summer, there'll be ways to unlock extra scenes and play mini-games within scenes.

Microsoft also is looking into building social networking tools into the content, as well as rewards and in-show purchases. Another possibility is saving comments during live events so late viewers can see them.

With its commitment to original content, Microsoft is trying to add value to its Xbox gaming console, which hasn't fared as well as Sony's PlayStation 4.

"Everyone is trying to bring eyeballs to their portals," Jonathan H. Hill, an associate dean at the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems at Pace University, told TechNewsWorld.

"Xbox has been one of Microsoft's few real winners over the last four or five years so this is a way to keep gamers in Xbox," he said.

"Traditional gamers have been moving away from Xbox, so by trying to blend the two worlds -- the entertainment world and the gaming world -- it's a way to stay current and keep eyeballs," Hill reasoned.

Securing Living Room Share

Original content is also a way for Microsoft to attract subscribers to its premium Xbox Live offering.

"The paid Live service originally offered multiplayer gaming features which have been available free of charge on other platforms such as Sony's PlayStation and Valve's Steam service for PC gamers," Rob Sanfilippo, an analyst with Directions On Microsoft, told TechNewsWorld.

"Microsoft later began offering music, movie and television applications through Xbox Live, but these applications have also been freely available through other platforms, such as standalone set-top boxes, and built into smart televisions," he continued. "Thus, Microsoft is under some pressure to provide additional offerings to paid Xbox Live customers to justify the fee."

Original content is also a way for Microsoft to maintain its competitive advantage in the battle for the living room.

"Microsoft is stronger than Apple and Google in the living room, so it wants to capitalize on that installed base," Ross Rubin, a principal analyst with Reticle Research, told TechNewsWorld.

"These are tentative steps," he said of Microsoft's content offerings. "They're building off properties they already have in the console business and building their audience off gamers, as opposed to being for a more general audience."

Microsoft has said its original content isn't for everyone but is directed squarely at the 18-34 male demographic -- the meat-and-potatoes audience for console games.

Hedging Bets

Original content is also a way for Microsoft to avoid being entirely at the mercy of content providers.

"One of the challenges common to all the device-content-service ecosystems that operate outside of the current pay-TV world is being able to license compelling content," Gartner Research Vice President Michael McGuire told TechNewsWorld.

"One way to hedge against the costs of licensing is to start developing unique content," he continued. "HBO did that. Showtime did that and, now, Netflix, too, has done that. It makes sense for Microsoft's Xbox team to follow suit."

That path won't be an easy one, though.

"This is like a lot of things Microsoft does; it's two years too late," Jim McGregor, founder and principal analyst at Tirias Research, told TechNewsWorld.

"Google has tried to get into this. Intel has tried to get into this. It's hard to get in when you're late to the party because solutions have already been established. It's even harder because the entertainment companies are very cautious with whom they work with," he pointed out.
